This year we moved our Christmas Party to the Civic Hall.

Fun was had by all, and thanks to all our amazing volunteers.

Burcot Close Care Home Fete

Burcot Fete

This was our second visit to the summer fete held this year on Saturday 18 August. Sandy and Jo ran a successful stall selling cakes made by some of our volunteers and plants mainly from Sandy’s own garden.

We raised a grand total of £88. Well done to all those concerned.

Donation from Oxfordshire Voluntary Foundation

Burcot Fete

We were very pleased to be selected to receive a donation of £577 from OVF as part of their ‘Small and Vital’ grant programme.

This money will be put towards running costs and we will be keeping OVF appraised of our progress over the next year.

DGNS attend Volunteer Recruitment Fair

Recruitment Fair

This year’s fair was held in June at Cornerstone Arts Centre and created a lot of interest from potential volunteers.

Our Co-ordinator Sandy was assisted by Jo, Sarah and Janice. There is always lots of competition from other local volunteer organisations so we were pleased with the amount of interest we got.

Long Service Volunteer Retires

Recruitment Fair

We were sorry to say goodbye to Mavis, one of our longest serving volunteers, who has decided to retire from being a DGNS volunteer. Mavis, along with her husband Michael, has been with us since we started in 2011 and has taken on some challenging clients over the years. Sandy and Alice presented Mavis with a lovely engraved ornament to thank her for all her work.

We wish both Mavis and Michael a very happy retirement.

News August 2017

At the beginning of this year I was surprised by Kathryn, our coordinator asking me to visit her to discuss some things. This turned out to be Kathryn deciding she was going to retire. I was equally surprised when she asked if I would be interested in her vacant position. After just a little bit of thought I decided that I would like to try to fill the gap, or should I say big void that Kathryn’s leaving would cause. I started to shadow Kathryn with many of the day to day running of our scheme and sat in on interviews with potential volunteers. Then I interviewed and accepted several volunteers myself. I also started to visit clients and join Kathryn at external meetings. The Didcot Good Neighbours Scheme owes Kathryn a great deal. She has been the coordinator for 6 years and has done an amazing job of getting the scheme off the ground and keeping interest going. She has recruited many volunteers and helped many clients over the years, bringing them together with many happy results. It seems inadequate but many thanks for all of your hard work.

My new roll started officially at the AGM on 6th April with me being voted on unanimously as the new coordinator. Although I had a bit of a rocky start with health problems, I did manage to get quite a bit done and have interviewed lots of potential new volunteers and clients. I have successfully matched up 8 so far. I also completed my ‘webinar training’ that enables me to do the DBS checks. Our meeting in July was well attended and very lively, my first as coordinator. This week has been very busy with interest from 4 potential volunteers really hope they will be suitable to join us. At this moment we have only one client waiting but that changes by the day. Many of our referrals’ still come from Age U.K.

We have organised a table at the Fete being held at ‘The Close’ nursing home in Burcot on 19th August. We will raise funds with the sale of plants, sweets and cakes. From 11am -4pm if the weather is good we should have a lovely day with many activities going on throughout the day. See posters around town. Lastly but not least I would like to thank our wonderful Volunteers for their many visits and all the help you give to our clients!

Annual General Meeting 2012

DGNS held their first AGM at the Didcot Civic Hall on 19 April 2012. A good turnout of volunteers and members of the public heard from the Chairman, Glyn Hall about the schemes progress and fundraising successes as well as a presentation of the accounts for the previous 18 months. All of the incumbent committee members were re-elected and two guest speakers, Claire Soper from Oxfordshire Social & Community Services and Liz Roberts from Soha Housing gave interesting presentations.

Successful Grant from Soha Housing

In November 2011 Didcot Good Neighbour Scheme was awarded a grant of £500 for the purchase of computer equipment from the Tenents' Forum Community Fund of Soha housing. Soha and DGNS hope to be working together in the future.
